[REVIEW] PANZERFAUST - The Suns of Perdition - Chapter III: The Astral Drain [2022] Eisenwald

The third part of the Panzerfaust Tetralogy is upon us and we are now swirling into the blackened void of a shared collective madness. In the first two chapters the band took us on an uncomfortable journey through our recent history and the unspeakable acts of horror and degradation we as a race have perpetrated. Now, in the third of a four part body of work, Panzerfaust takes us fully into the abyss, charting our descent into an outer darkness of insanity and uncomfortable truths. “The Suns of Perdition - Chapter III: The Astral Drain'' blends a sound of malevolent crushing intensity, with the cold, textured and measured onslaught that is pure Panzerfaust. Though a band who specialise in Black Metal, there is brooding Death Metal element reminiscent of Bolzer, and the droning potency and ardour of both the agonised growled vocals and the relentless nature of the buzzing guitars brings to mind the rancorous atmosphere created on “Sonic Mass'' by Amebix. These are merely comparisons that touch upon certain aspects of this album, and Panzerfaust have a sound that is very distinctly their own, and have created a maniacal, hypnotic sound to match the utter bleakness and anguish of the story being told.

Throughout “Chapter III” Panzerfaust have constructed an aura of something beyond gloom; it’s an all encompassing lightlessness, a maelstrom of savage musical power built upon the base of an oppressive drumming style and the rumble of seismic bass lines. Even if you discount four downright  insanity-inducing melodic interludes, tracks such as opener “Death-Drive Projections” act as a savage Panzerfaust’s fourth chapter looks set to be an unmissable album of cataclysmic proportions, as “Chapter III’ has finished plunging its listeners into the sweet grasp of combined lunacy!
