[REVIEW] HELLMOON – Harrowing Remains [2022] Jems Label

Canada’s Hellmoon return with new album Harrowing Remains

My quiet unassuming bank holiday has been completely ripped apart and quite frankly I could not be happier as the familiar name of PLÄÄG appears on my timeline with a brand-new release ready to join its predecessors.

The opening track ‘Caliginous Mysticism’ makes an immediate impact, piercing and attacking the speakers with a fury that I have not heard on previous releases. Continuing in this way ‘Nightmare Spiral’ is my highlight track of the release, it is fast and relentless with some great guitar parts which still make their way through amongst the swirling amalgamation of despair and terror.

Title Track ‘Harrowing Remains’ opens with a piercing battle cry which continues to pummel throughout. Primal and visceral are absolutely accurate descriptions of what is going on for the duration and once again the guitar parts are solid gold.

A lot of low-fi love needs to be shown for ‘Abyssal Devotion’ there is not a single track of this release that is not trying to scratch and claw at your throat and to be honest it is a type of attack that I am more than ready to succumb to as it is just layer upon layer of raw black metal!

The final infernal hymn ‘Mortal Vexation’ is short but no less lethal in its delivery.

Harrowing Domains is a call for the end, a requiem for our realm headed towards absolute annihilation and certain doom.

A visceral awakening.

Review by Rick Eaglestone.

The album premiered digitally on the 31st of August in an unholy collaboration with The Call of the Night
