You can have all of the technical prowess in the world, but sometimes all you need is a hypnotic Dungeon Synth intro track, followed by some fast paced simple drum beats melded to some raw guitar leads and more synth in the background for the atmospherics, and you're on to a winner. Meet 'Malignant Descent', the debut album from Spaniard Sanguinous Moth, and his new project Verminous Knight.
Here is an album that strikes the right balance between Black Metal and Dungeon Synth. Packed to the gills with furious and intensive riff-age, harrowing shrieked vocals and insanely mesmerizing synth work throughout, and all kept in time by a drumming display that crosses the border into outright perky territory. For a full blooded, grim corpse painted blast of icy traditional Black Metal, this album sure is fun and catchy!
It's hard to pick one favourite track from 'Malignant Descent' as they are all contenders, and so I'll cheat and go for the bizarre Black Metal disco that is 'Blind Kingdom of Betrayal' as well as the far more serious and forbidding rhythms of 'Punished to A Life Sentence' which injects a vein of steel and ice into an album than for the most part has been fast and frantic! A fantastic debut album, and one you'll be able to enjoy on cassette in the UK and EU thanks to Forbidden Keep records so don't miss out!
