[REVIEW] SIDIOUS - Blackest Insurrection [2022] Clobber Records

Band: SIDIOUS
Location: LONDON, UK
Release: BLACKEST INSURRECTION
Label: CLOBBER RECORDS
Year: 2022
Genre: BLACK METAL

British black metallers Sidious have been plugging away for a decade now, and with the release of their third full length 'Blackest Insurrection' will hopefully start to see the fruits of their work, after the superb groundwork of previous records 'Revealed in Profane Splendour' and particularly their previous one, 'Temporal'. 'Blackest Insurrection' is out now through Clobber Records.

The torrent of icy black riffs pouring from the opening title track immediately drops comparisons to prime Emperor and Darkthrone, but with a singular intent that would rival even those icons. However, there is a galloping openness to it that contrasts well with those harsher moments, all the while accompanied by a furious shriek. 'Blood-Soaked Mist' is a dynamic track, playing with pacing and weight with a deftness most bands would kill for, while the bleak thunder of 'Hailing Shards of Agony' paints in the most melancholic strokes of grey. There is a measured grandeur to it; it gives me a little 1349 or Dark Funeral vibe but with a much more submersive atmosphere.

'Thy Palace Yond the Threshold' is one of the rarest of beasts; a modern black metal track that is actually catchy! That doesn't make it any less grim, with a number of passages that course through your veins like fire and soar like a dead-eyed raven, but it isn't half memorable. 'Thousandfold Will' mixes it up between mid paced stomp and exhilarating cascade of guitar work, while closer 'Jewel of the Hadean Crown' is a truly atmospheric masterpiece, maintaining a real sense of menace while increasing the scope of what has come before into bleak vastness. An all time album closer right here.

'Blackest Insurrection' is just the latest work to prove that the British black metal scene is as fertile as it has ever been. Taming a wild fury with cold, steely riffs and an enshrouding atmosphere like mists over a windswept moor, Sidious have really brought their A-game here, realising all the potential built through their previous work into one of the scene's brightest, blackest hopes.
